The rate

Three hours is the commonest booking on a converted Grid terrace. Two suits a maisonette. Or one of the flats near the station. Four is what a full house with three floors and a family in it actually needs, and we would rather say that at the start than have you disappointed at eleven o’clock.

What three hours gets you

Kitchen surfaces, the hob, the sink and the fronts of the units. Both bathrooms if there are two, shower screen included. Hoovering and mopping right through. Dusting, skirtings when they need it, beds changed where you have left the linen out. Ironing is £12 an hour on top and comes out of nobody’s cleaning time.

Three floors changes the estimate

A converted Grid house has a hoover carried up two flights and a bathroom on every level, which is why a terrace that looks identical from the street can need an extra half hour compared with its neighbour four doors down. The dog-leg up to the loft is the slow part. Stairs cost time. For houses we do every week we leave a second hoover upstairs where there is somewhere to keep it, since carrying one up and down eats ten minutes of a three hour visit.

The shower screen is a weekly job here

Thames Water runs hard through SW18, so glass and chrome scale faster than most people expect. A screen wiped and dried every visit stays clear for years. A screen left for six months needs acid gel and half an hour of somebody’s time, and once the scale has etched into the glass, nothing brings the clarity back. Dry it after use. Where a house has been let go for a while we would rather start with a one off reset with two cleaners and then hold it there on the weekly rate.

Getting in

Most of our regulars leave a key with us or fit a key safe by the door. Keys are tagged with a code, never an address. If you would rather be in, that works too. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings go first, because the Tuesday round already runs the streets off Gressenhall Road, past the Fazl Mosque that has stood there since 1926, and a cleaner who is fifty yards away starts on time.

Where the weekly visit stops

An hourly cleaner works to a list and a clock. Insides of ovens, carpet extraction and pulling out a washing machine sit outside that, because they need a machine or a second pair of hands. The oven is its own booking at £77 for a single, and carpets are priced per room from £36. It never fits. Ask a cleaner to squeeze an oven into a three hour visit and something else on your list goes undone.

Holidays, swaps and stopping

Tell us a week ahead and we move the visit or skip it, nothing to pay either way. Inside 24 hours we may charge for the cleaner’s time, because she has turned other work down to hold your slot. Cleaners take holidays as well. We offer cover and a fair few people say they would rather wait for their own one to come back, which we understand.

Who books it round here

Southfields is mostly owner-occupier and family heavy, with a band of professional renters and sharers in the flats nearer the station. So the weekly work tends to be school-run households who want the house sorted by pick-up, and the fortnightly work tends to be two people who are out all day and only see the place at the weekend. A handful of the short let owners near the station keep us on fortnightly through the winter and then switch to turnarounds for the summer, which suits everybody. Both work for us. The rate is the same in the houses over in Wimbledon Park and across at the houses round Wandsworth Common, and the rest of what we charge for sits on our price list.

A week’s notice and we move or skip the visit at no charge. Inside 24 hours we may charge for the cleaner’s time, because the slot was held and other work turned away. Holidays booked in advance are never charged.

A wipe of the front and the top, yes. A proper oven clean needs the racks out and into the dip tank in the van, which is a separate booking at £77 for a single. Squeezing it into a three hour visit means something else on the list gets dropped.
