Carpet cleaning in Southfields is charged by the room. A bedroom is £36, a living room £43, a through lounge £61 and a flight of stairs £41. We use hot water extraction, which drives solution into the pile under pressure and pulls it back out in the same stroke. No bonnet pads. The machine either stays in the van with hose run through the front door, or comes in on its wheels, and which one depends entirely on how many floors are involved.

One room on its own runs into our £67 minimum for one off work. Two rooms clear it without trouble. Booked as part of a move-out clean the carpets are simply added to that job and there is no second call-out.

Pine boards under the underlay

Half the Grid still has its original suspended floor. Lift a bedroom carpet in one of these terraces and you find pine boards with gaps between them, sometimes wide enough to see the joist through. That changes how we work. Too much water goes straight down into the void, takes days to clear and can lift a board at the edge, so on a loose-laid carpet over old boards we run drier passes and more vacuum strokes, and it takes longer than a modern floor would. The extra twenty minutes is cheaper than a damp smell in August.

Stairs, and the flight most people forget

Stairs are £41 a flight. A Grid house with a loft conversion has two of them, as do plenty of the terraces east of the park in Earlsfield, and the second is the dog-leg up to the room in the roof, narrow, with a turn no full-size machine gets round. Hose and a hand tool go up there instead. Say on the phone that the loft room is carpeted and the quote will already have it in.

Through lounges and the bigger houses

A through lounge is £61. It is one continuous run of carpet with a doorway missing rather than two separate rooms. We see more of those in the double-fronted houses over towards Wandsworth Common than in the Grid itself, where the front room and the back room usually still have a wall between them. Wool is commoner in the larger houses too, and wool wants a lower moisture setting.

Drying, and what to do about the windows

Most rooms are walkable in about two hours and properly dry by the evening. Damp weather stretches that out. Where a front bay looks onto a busy stretch of Merton Road people would rather keep the windows shut, which is fair, so we bring an air mover for that room. Underfloor heating, which turns up in the newer flats, goes off before we start and not after.

Stains we will not promise on

Old pet accidents that soaked through into the underlay, dye transfer off a cheap rug, bleach marks, biro. Those come out sometimes and sometimes they do not. We will have a proper go at anything in the room. What we will not do is take money for a stain treatment we already expect to fail, so if a mark looks permanent we say so while we are still standing over it. Sun bleaching along the front bay is the common one on these streets. Nothing takes that back.

Before we arrive

Move the small things off the floor. We shift sofas and beds, though we will not empty a wardrobe or unplug somebody’s home office. Vacuuming first is not needed, since our machine does it better, but picking up the toys does help. Parking near the station has usually gone by nine on a weekday, so an early slot in that pocket means we arrive with the app session already paid for and start on time.

When a carpet is past cleaning

A carpet that has been down twenty years and is worn to the backing in the doorway will come up cleaner and still look worn. Extraction lifts soil and it lifts smell. It does not put pile back that has gone flat under a hall runner. On a rental where the inventory already lists the carpet as heavily worn, a clean is still worth doing before the check-out. In your own house the money is sometimes better spent on new carpet, and we will tell you that even though it costs us the job.
